Schematic of the human olfactory pathway. The pathway of primary odour information from the olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) in the olfactory epithelium of the nose to the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON), piriform cortex (PIR) and entorhinal cortex (EC) via mitral cell projections. This circuitry is based on the olfactory circuitry of the mouse brain and has been extrapolated to the human brain. Abbreviations: AONb, bulbar anterior olfactory nucleus; AONi, intrapeduncular anterior olfactory nucleus; AONc, cortical anterior olfactory nucleus; CN, caudate nucleus; GL, glomerular layer; MCL, mitral cell layer
