Subacute superficial cortical cerebral microinfarct (case 5) with pallor in the PN stain (a). At higher magnification, neuronal somata show reduced Darrow red (Nissl) staining, but no extracellular lipofuscin granules are visible (a1 and a2). Also, no string vessels or other obvious changes are evident in the microvascular network visualized with IHC using antibodies against Coll4 (b and inset b1). Scale bars: 500 μm (a-b)
