The pathological hallmark of MSA is the presence of glial cytoplasmic inclusions (GCIs) in the brain. Micrographs show white matter underlying the motor cortex stained using α-synuclein immunohistochemistry and Nissl counterstaining (0.5 % cresyl violet). The typical GCI aggregates in oligodendrocytes in MSA (also shown at higher power in inset) are not found in healthy controls
