Myelin debris accumulation in the CNS is increased in EAE in the absence of IFNβ or its receptor. EAE was induced by immunization with 200 μg MOG35–55 peptide in WT, IFNβ−/− and IFNAR1−/− mice. Animals of each genotype with an equivalent clinical score (>2) were sacrificed at d17. Shown are representative brain sections stained for CCR2 and Mac3 (a) and Iba1 and MBP (b) together with DAPI using fluorescence microscopy. Arrows mark accumulated myelin debris in close proximity to activated microglia and arrow heads mark myelin debris in the lesion structure. Scale bar represents 25 μm (a) and 50 μm (b).
