Fig. 4

ADbe inoculation increases tau pathology in APPswe/PS1dE9 mice close to the injection site (8 mpi). Increased AT8-positive neuropil threads (a, p < 0.0001) and NFTs (b, AT8-positive NFTs per 100 µm2 of area, p < 0.0001) in the hippocampus as well as neuropil threads in the alveus (c, p < 0.0001) of ADbe-inoculated animals compared to Ctrlbe-animals. The number of AT8-positive neuritic plaques was similar in all groups (NPs per 100 µm2 of area, d), but the AT8-positive area within neuritic plaques was higher in ADbe- compared to Ctrlbe-inoculated animals (e, p < 0.0001). Increased overall AT8-labelled phospho-tau in the hippocampus (f) and alveus (g) following ADbe inoculation compared to Ctrlbe (percentage of AT8-positive area, p < 0.0001). ****p < 0.0001. nCtrl = 15, nAD1 = 15 (light pink), nAD2 = 20 mice (dark pink). Mann Whitney's tests. Data are shown as mean ± s.e.m. NT = neuropil threads; NFT = neurofibrillary tangles; NP = neuritic plaques
